WHEN TO PRUNE ESTABLISHED TREES

 

A suggested rough guide.

 

(Nb the rules may be different for new trees)

Apples.

Free standing trees prune in winter. (November to early March when the tree is dormant)

Cordons, espaliers and dwarf pyramids prune in summer.

Apricots.

Bushes. Prune in Spring

Cherries.

Do not prune in winter.

Sweet cherry bushes – prune in June- late July

Acid cherry bushes – prune in spring.

Damsons

Prune between April and September.

Figs.

Prune in June.

Greengages.

Prune between April and September.

Mulberries.

Prune as little as possible so probably not compatible with an allotment site!

Peaches and Nectarines.

Do not prune in winter.

Prune in spring

Pears

Prune in winter.

Plums.

Do not prune in winter

Prune in June- late July

Quinces.

Prune in winter.
